Claude chatbot, Anthropic’s LLM trained by its Constitutional AI, can now remember past conversations, providing more personalized and relevant responses. Users can seamlessly continue the projects without losing track, refer to the previous discussions, and enhance the overall quality of responses.
Unlike ChatGPT, which enhances the conversations indirectly, even if the users haven’t explicitly asked it to remember specific details, the Claude AI will only refer to the past chats when a user needs it. Users who don’t want this memory function have the option to disable it.
According to Anthropic, this capability, which analyzes the broader history of users’ interactions, allows building ideas without starting from scratch every time. The feature is currently available on Claude’s Max, Team, and Enterprise subscription tiers, and can be accessed across web, desktop, and mobile.
How Does Claude’s ‘Search and Reference Chats’ Feature Work?
Users who enable the ‘Search and Reference Chats’ feature will be able to continue discussions even after a long time, without re-explaining everything. If a user needs specific information from the previous chats, Claude can deliver it. Also, it can keep the context intact indefinitely.
The default boundaries of the feature include the individual project conversations and the chats outside the projects. You can use prompts such as “What did we discuss about [topic]?”, “Can you find our conversation about [subject]?”, and “Let’s continue where we left off with [project]” to get a basic understanding of its working mechanism.
How to Enable Claude’s ‘Search and Reference Chats’?
Claude Max, Team, and Enterprise users can enable the ‘Search and Reference Chats’ feature by visiting the Preferences section. Here is a detailed guide:
- Make sure you have a Max, Team, or Enterprise subscription.
- Access the app and navigate to the “Settings” menu.
- Click the “Profile” option and scroll down to find the “Preferences” section.
- Inside “Preferences”, enable the “Search and reference chats” feature.
Claude Enhances Memory Capabilities to Compete With ChatGPT
ChatGPT, the pioneering AI ecosystem, has significantly enhanced its memory features recently, contributing to the creation of ChatGPT Agents that mimic the memory capabilities of humans. By default, it can provide personalized results by drawing context from the broader history of the user’s interactions.

By introducing the search and reference to past conversations, the Claude chatbot competes with ChatGPT, primarily with its exceptionally large context window, capable of processing up to 100,000 tokens (or roughly 150 pages of text). However, Claude has various drawbacks, including its lack of image generation features and the inability to provide creative content as good as GPT.
Meanwhile, Claude has been integrated with popular platforms such as Canva, Stripe, Figma, Prisma, and Asana, where users save time while designing complex creations. Also, the Pro and Max users can connect to Google Workspace (email, calendar, docs, etc.) to enhance their work.
