Microsoft Outlook, the widely used email service, has been facing a global disruption since 9 July 2025. The outage has largely affected the US and its major cities, such as Washington, Dallas, and NewYork. Since Wednesday, Outlook services, including calendar, have been disrupted for nearly 21 hours. The reports came around 7:35 p.m. ET; however, it severely affected Outlook users around 10:20 p.m.
Many users had trouble loading their inboxes or signing in. Numerous users reported that a message stating they do not have a valid license to use the mail was shown while logging in, and others reported an unbearable loading time.
What Did Microsoft 365 Say About the Outlook Service Interruption?

The Microsoft 365 team first said that they were investigating the issue and the cause behind the disruption. The message came on Wednesday night. They later said that they had changed the configuration, and it was being deployed worldwide.
“Our configuration changes have effectively resolved the impact on the targeted infrastructure. We’re now deploying the changes worldwide to resolve the impact for all users,” Microsoft said in an X post on Thursday afternoon. They assured that the services will be restored within 2 hours and informed that the team is continuously monitoring the functions.
The team also said that the deployment was progressing at a quicker pace than expected. Even though the team has been working since the outage, they haven’t confirmed the exact cause of the service disruption.
Outlook users have taken the issue to social media, and many posts included screenshots of “something went wrong”. Users also said that their mail wasn’t getting delivered, especially personal mail. They also reported that it was hopelessly slow. We could see X posts stating, “Is Microsoft Outlook down today?”.
The last Microsoft outage was in November 2024, which is said to have impacted collaboration and productivity tools like Outlook and Teams. The services faced major delays in their recovery. It took more than 24 hours for the services to get back on track.
Did the Outage Affect Microsoft Outlook on all Devices?
Yes, the outage affected the accessibility of Outlook on web, desktop, and mobile phones. According to Downdetector, a platform that reviews issues and outages of all services, 62% of users reported problems while logging in, 33% faced connectivity errors, and 5% weren’t able to send emails.
Overall, 2000 complaints were raised during the incident. A few hours before the outage, many users said that they were having trouble using Teams. The issue lasted for around 20 hours, and the Microsoft team confirmed that the services were restored.

Is the Microsoft Outlook service fully restored?
The Microsoft 356 team has assured that the Outlook services have been fully restored. Some issues may occur until the system is completely stabilised. Microsoft Outlook users were facing difficulty in some regions. Some users reported that they could not log in to their mail accounts through iPhones. The Microsoft 356 team has advised users not to change or reset their passwords during the outage. On 11 July 2025, Friday, the team confirmed that they had configured the change, and the issue has been resolved completely. They also established that Outlook is functioning normally.
“We’ve confirmed that the configuration change has fully saturated throughout the affected environments and resolved the impact for all users. For more information, see https://portal.office.com/servicestatus/ or EX1112414 in the Microsoft 365 admin centre,” the Microsoft 356 Status said.
Many users have confirmed that they were able to log in to their Outlook accounts and send their emails. Apart from Outlook and Calendar, no other Microsoft services were affected in the outage. Meanwhile, speculations are that it may have been caused by a cyberattack. But they are just unconfirmed speculations, and there is no concrete evidence.
